Mauritius ahead of Germany

As to economic freedom Mauritius is ahead of Germany, which – according to the index „Economic Freedom of the World“ – internationally has dropped to place 27. The small African island grants a free employment market, thereby facilitating companies the raising of outside capital, as reported by “Die Welt” September 14th. Already since 2006 the VDM group on Mauritius relies on this, i.e. the main part of VDM Publishing House Ltd. activities with soon 100 staff members is carried out here. Larger freedom – more books!

Recomment us 2.0

As an author of the VDM Verlag Dr. Müller, LAMBERT Academic Publishing or the SVH, you know that we are always on the lookout for articles, excellent final thesis works, and dissertations. We are really pleased when you draw our attention to material worth publishing.

For every successful author recommendation you receive a free copy of your own or another title from our extensive publishing house program as a token of our appreciation. Our long-standing authors (and perhaps you too) know the form of recommending authors, which has to be filled in and sent to us by email or fax - how elaborate for all of us!

With our 1st May update of VDM, LAP, and SVH online ,we have now greatly simplified this process: Now you can enter an author recommendation directly via your personal online account and at the same time check whether this has been successful or not! So you are always automatically up to date about whether and when you can expect your free copy.

The process is quite simple: Under the “Recommend author/ recommend new author” item, simply supply the required data directly – the ISBN of the free copy you desired can, for example, be found simply under Amazon.de/com/uk.

As soon as you click on “Apply”, your author recommendation appears in our system and we make contact immediately. Under the item “Authors recommended by me” you will always have an overview of whether a contract has been successful and whether you will receive the desire free copy.

We wish you and ourselves many interesting and successful author recommendations!

"Publishers Weekly": On-Demand Printing Drove Title Output in '08

While the number of traditional titles in U.S. fell in 2008 by 3%, the number of on-demand, short run and unclassified soared 132%, to 285,394. The 2008 jump followed an even bigger increase in on-demand/short run titles in 2007, when output rose to 123,276 titles from 21,936. Larger publishers are also using on-demand printing more. The combination of the rapid growth of on-demand printing and the decline in the number of traditional titles resulted in the number of on-demand titles topping traditional titles for the first time in 2008. In the 2004–2008 period, the number of traditional titles published fell 2.0%, while the number of on-demand titles released skyrocketed by 1,346.5%! While improved technology has made the use of on-demand printing more economically attractive, the economy also played a role in reducing the number of traditional titles released last year.

VDM is in line with the trend!

Frankfurt Book Fair 2008

E-books and digitalisation were under the spotlight at this year’s 60th Frankfurt Book Fair (15 - 19 October). Themes which VDM have been intensively employing for a while now and which have been merged into the work of the publishing house through print-on-demand (POD) technology.
VDM is therefore well prepared for the digital book "revolution" - so much so that the first titles from VDM will be available in the book trade in time for the introduction of the Sony Reader Digital Book in the spring of 2009.
The Saarbrücken-based  publishing house , which was represented by ten staff at the book fair this year, is now planning to expand into the Spanish-speaking market. Talks are being  held in Frankfurt with Latin-American distributors and book suppliers. For the traditional Spanish distributors the concept of POD is "Terra incognita".
The internationalisation of VDM enticed  Publishers Weekly  (aka PW) to hold an extensive interview with VDM at the book fair. The article is due to appear in the next edition of PW.
The magazine "Forum VDM" which has been published to great acclaim, is now to be sent out quarterly to customers, partners and authors, covering news and current affairs relating to the publishing house.

VDM enforces collaboration with Lightning Source

Since May 2007, “VDM-Verlag” cooperates with English printing and logistics company Lightning Source, an affiliate of the Ingram Book Group. This cooperation is largely beneficial for the German publishing house which aims at stepping up its monthly production of English titles to 2,500 copies in 2009. One of the main trump cards of Lightning Source is its print on demand (POD) process allowing for books to be printed to order in the desired quantity and shipped, all within 48 hours. Thanks to this procedure VDM is in a position to ensure that even customers “on the other side of the world” will have their book of choice delivered quickly.

VDM refreshes the market of reprints

Since June 2006 VDM publishing house has published more than 900 reprints as “Edition Classic” and has also been successful in this field of book business. Most of the reprinted scientific books originate from “old masters” – among them are famous authors such as Rudolf Virchow, Wilhelm Wundt, Franz Brentano, Max Scheler and many others. VDM has also republished the scripts of almost forgotten or misjudged authors of the 19th century like those of biologist Paul Kammerer or of George Engelmann, a German-American gynaecologist. Readers of today appreciate the historical greatness of their writings. Blockbuster of “Edition Classic” are still Vaihingers` “Die Philosophie des Als Ob” and the works of well-known psychiatrist Emil Kraepelin and of philosopher Hermann Cohen.

VDM publishing house will continue the edition after a technical reconstruction in autumn.

VDM publishing house on Mauritius

VDM publishing house operates an office with 16 employees since April 2007 on Mauritius. The main reason for setting up a subsidiary on the island in the Indian ocean apart from its beauty and infrastucture, is that its habitants are excellent workforce educated according to British standards and being native English and French speakers. Katalin Bontenakels, member of board at VDM responsible for international business development, says: "Mauritius proved to be a very good location to publish books of academic authors worldwide. In the near future we plan to double the amount of employees. Our aim is to publish 2.500 new English titles per month in 2009."

She adds that VDM continues its successful expansion plans by looking at other promising locations as well in order to reach the required goals.
